SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — Amid the shouts from a large crowd in a high school auditorium, the Shelbyville City Council on Monday night advanced plans that could bring a multibillion-dollar data center to the community southeast of Indianapolis.
The council voted 4-2, with one abstention, to approve the annexation and zoning of 429 acres. That land would be combined with city-owned property for a data center on more than 575 acres with up to 13 buildings for San Francisco-based Prologis.
The acreage sits off east of the I-74 interchange for State Road 44.
The city government says next steps include having the city receive and review site design plans, utility coordination and capacity, noise mitigation measures, development standards, and permitting requirements. Regulatory approvals may also be needed.
The first public hearing on the proposal happened Jan. 5, and the city’s Plan Commission two days later gave the zoning request an unfavorable recommendation. Opponents have expressed environmental and health concerns.
Shelbyville is a city of 19,500 residents about a 40-minute drive southeast of downtown Indianapolis.
