Feeding families in need
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Mid-North Food Pantry in Indianapolis is experiencing unprecedented demand, serving 233 families in a two-hour shift as of their latest Saturday pantry event.
Located at 3333 N. Meridian St., the pantry operates on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, as well as the third Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to noon. The pantry serves low or no-income individuals and has seen a significant increase in demand due to rising food prices.
“We’re seeing need like nothing we’ve ever seen in our 40 plus years,” Kelsey Burton, executive director of the pantry, said. “Families are just so grateful that we have these services in the community.”
The pantry started Saturday pantries once a month to accommodate those who cannot visit during the week.
This initiative is supported by Surplus City and aims to provide essential food items such as fresh produce and protein. The pantry receives substantial support from local organizations like Gleaners, the Indy Hunger Network, and Second Helpings, as well as grocery stores such as Kroger and Whole Foods.
Despite these contributions, the pantry still needs to purchase certain items like eggs. Volunteers and donors are crucial to the pantry’s operations.
Burton says the need more volunteer support and financial donations are needed to continue meeting the growing demand.
The pantry strives to create a welcoming environment for those in need, ensuring dignity and respect for all visitors. Efforts include hosting events outdoors with music to make the experience less daunting for first-time visitors.
