‘Meet UIndy’ event connects and educates businesses on Gen Z job seekers

Meet UIndy connects Gen Z applicants with employers

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The University of Indianapolis is hosting an event called “Meet UIndy” on Tuesday to help employers connect with the next generation of job seekers.

Organizers say the event will take place at the Health Pavilion, 1643 E. Hanna Ave., on the UIndy campus from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The event will feature panels with students and faculty, as well as a keynote speaker from Ascend Indiana.

“This event gives employers an opportunity to meet our students, our faculty, our staff, and to understand a lot about how to build their talent pipeline,” said Jessica Sremanak, UIndy’s director of employer engagement.

Sremanak, along with recent UIndy graduate, Maxiel Abreu-Leon, joined Daybreak on Monday to discuss the event.

Sremenak says that more than 30 employers have registered for the event, ranging from nonprofits to global companies. The event includes a student panel that will give unfiltered advice on what works when recruiting Gen Z students and what’s important to them.

A faculty panel will explain how employers can build their own long-term talent pipeline, and a keynote address from the CEO of Ascend Indiana will talk about the coming changes to the workforce.

“We’ll have a student panel. They’ll talk about what they’re interested in in terms of careers and making choices about which employers they’re interested in. We’ll have a faculty panel talking about how to get involved with things like, of course, internships, but also experiential learning opportunities,”  Sremanak said.

Abreu-Leon emphasized the importance of community and mentorship for Gen Z job seekers.

“I would say I think what most Gen Z are looking for is kind of a sense of community in what they’re applying. I was looking for a place that had strong mentors that could really guide me and lead me in what I was working with. So, I would say overall that’s kind of what Gen Z applicants are looking for in their jobs,” Abreu-Leon said.

She also noted that while remote work is valued, many Gen Z individuals prefer a hybrid work model that balances remote and in-person collaboration.

Businesses interested in attending the ‘Meet UIndy’ event can still sign up by emailing Sremanak at Sremanakj@unidy.edu.
