IndyCar team hauler catches fire on drive back to Indy from Iowa

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A tough weekend in Iowa only got worse on the way home for the Juncos Hollinger Racing team — specifically Sting Ray Robb’s crew.

Robb’s hauler caught fire on Interstate 74 during its trip back to Juncos Hollinger Racing’s headquarters in Indianapolis Sunday night. No injuries were reported.

A passerby caught the aftermath on camera and posted it to social media.

“It was a scary moment for the team, but thankfully, everyone is safe, and that’s what matters most,” the team released in a statement.

The statement went on to say:

“We’ve been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support, messages, and well wishes from fans, fellow teams, INDYCAR officials, and the entire racing community. It’s a reminder of the incredible family we have in this sport. We’re assessing the damage and will be working hard to get back on track. Thank you again for everything. Your support fuels our determination!”

Robb’s No. 77 Goodheart Chevy’s day ended early Sunday when he lost control and slid into the wall after 48 laps. Robb finished 24th both races in the two-day doubleheader.

Robb’s Juncos Hollinger Racing teammate Conor Daly started Saturday’s race second and spent most of the race battling eventual winner Pato O’Ward and Josef Newgarden. Daly finished seventh Saturday and fell nine spots during Sunday’s race, starting seventh and finishing 16th.

IndyCar returns to the track Sunday in Toronto. Green flag is scheduled for noon Eastern.

Tune in to Sportslocker Sunday at 10:20 p.m. on WISH-TV for a one-on-one conversation with Toronto’s champion.
