KOKOMO, Ind. (WISH) — The Howard County prosecutor on Tuesday said he’s asked the Indiana State Police to lead the investigation into a police shooting that killed a 30-year-old Kokomo man on Sunday morning.
Johnathon Shane Landis died in the shooting, although the cause and manner of death on Tuesday were pending autopsy and toxicology results, the coroner said.
The shooting happened in the 2100 block of South Lafountain Street, near the East Boulevard intersection. No officers were injured. The Kokomo Police Department has not reported what led to the shooting or if anyone else was injured. The name of the officer or officers who fired shots have not been publicly shared.
Prosecutor Mark A. McCann, a Republican, said in a statement that made the request was made to Lt. T.J. Zeiser, commander of Indiana State Police district based in Peru, to ensure an independent and impartial investigation.
Indiana State Police confirmed later Tuesday afternoon that it’s investigating the Kokomo shooting.
