In their own words: 8 quotes from Colts joint practice with the Ravens

BALTIMORE (WISH) — The Colts hit the road, travelling out to Baltimore for a joint practice with the Ravens ahead of their preseason matchup on Thursday.

Here are eight quotes that stood out from the joint practice:

1. Shane Steichen on the plan for the quarterbacks

“Anthony (Richardson Sr.) will start on Thursday. The plan is for him to play about a quarter and a half and then get Daniel (Jones) about a half a quarter. In a perfect world, that’s how I want it to play out. And then the following week against Green Bay, Daniel will start and get about a quarter and a half and then Anthony will play about half a quarter.”

Richardson and Jones have been in an open competition for the starting quarterback job throughout training camp.

2. Jonathan Taylor on Richardson and Jones

“I think that they’ve both been pushing each other. Daniel will make a play. Then Anthony will make a play and vice versa. So, I think that makes everyone better because now when the quarterback’s making plays, it makes the receivers, the running backs, the o-line, everyone want to do their job at a high level so that they continue to make those plays because we know that’s who’s going to lead this team. The quarterback is going to lead this team, and we’re all just going to going to do our small part to make each one of them better. It’s been a great competition.”

3. Steichen on how the offense played during the joint practice

“I thought there were some really good things being done offensively. I thought both quarterbacks did some really good things. I thought AD (Mitchell) had a really big day. Overall, the offensive line was really good up front.”

4. Steichen on the importance of having the joint practice

“I think it’s great to go against a team that’s had a lot of success like they have had over the last decade or whatever it’s been. The quarterback they have, it is great. That competition makes us better too so to get that work out here today with them I thought was just phenomenal.”

Tuesday was the first of two joint practices the Colts will have this season. They will host the Green Bay Packers at Grand Park on Thursday, August 14 ahead of their preseason game against the Packers.

5. Taylor on the importance of having the joint practice

“It’s nice to go against some other colored jersey’s and some different guys, some different schemes and like you said a really good team over there so a chance to work some of our stuff. I think it was a great day. Both sides were competing back and forth and that’s what you want, you want to be able to create that edge going into the season.”

6. Camryn Bynum on the importance of the joint practice

“Coming out here you don’t know every single person on the other team and some people have never played against this team so being able to go against news guys and people that like I said are really good. This is a team that has gone deep into the playoffs every single year, almost to the Super Bowl multiple times so being able to go against that will for sure get us ready to go for the season.”

7. Steichen on AD Mitchell’s performance

“You want to see that growth. Like I’ve been saying, his playmaking ability and his route running ability is phenomenal. To see the plays he’s been making over the last few weeks is really good for us. Really good for him. You want to see that jump from last year and he continues to grow and make strides and we got to continue that consistency there.”

Mitchell is in his second season with the Colts. He was drafted in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

He had 23 catches for 312 yards in his rookie season.

8. Bynum on his impressions of the Colts

“It’s a family atmosphere. That’s the one thing that stands out. Being here, everybody treats each other like family. You saw the fight earlier. One guy pushed somebody, and the whole sideline cleared. Obviously, we don’t want that, but you look at it as a good thing.”

Bynum signed with the Colts on a four-year, $60 million contract this offseason.

There was a fight during the special teams period of the joint practice with the Ravens.

The Colts are scheduled to kickoff in their first preseason game against the Ravens at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
