Fighting the stress standstill
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Dr. Danielle Henderson, a clinical psychologist at IU Health, discussed the impact of stress on productivity and strategies to manage it during a recent segment.
Stress can significantly hinder productivity by affecting concentration and memory, primarily due to the hormone cortisol. Henderson emphasized the importance of being aware of physical symptoms of stress and implementing strategies to manage them.
“Stress can really have an impact on us,” Henderson said. “One of the things that we think about with stress is a hormone called cortisol.”
Henderson noted that cortisol, often referred to as the stress hormone, can remain elevated even in seemingly calm situations, impacting our ability to concentrate and remember tasks. She advised individuals to become aware of their body’s response to stress, such as increased heart rate or tension, and to identify situations that trigger these responses.
To combat stress, Henderson suggested taking breaks, enjoying nature, and engaging in deep breathing exercises. “As best as you can, try to take breaks or schedule breaks,” she said. Henderson also highlighted the importance of not internalizing stress as a personal flaw, but rather recognizing it as a common experience that can be managed with the right strategies.
