INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indianapolis Fire Department firefighters on Saturday morning rescued a 5-year-old boy from an apartment fire on the city’s northeast side.
At 8:11 a.m. Saturday, IFD firefighters were dispatched to an apartment complex in the 2800 block of Barbary Lane. That is on the city’s northeast side. A 32-year-old woman told IFD she awoke to find heavy black smoke, was unable to reach her child, panicked, evacuated out the sliding glass door, and called 911.
Firefighters arrived to the apartment complex, and found smoke and fire pushing from the three-story structure and made an aggressive attack. At 8:19 a.m. Saturday, firefighters entered the apartment and found the boy asleep inside his bedroom, which had a closed door. The closed door kept the heavy black, toxic smoke from entering the bedroom, which prevented the boy from suffering any injuries or becoming a fatality.
At 8:21 a.m. Saturday, the fire was marked under control after five minutes.
The boy was taken to Riley Hospital. The boy’s mother declined to be transported to the hospital.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
