INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A toddler was hospitalized and their grandfather was in custody after the child overdosed on the grandfather’s THC edibles, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said.
Police say a 911 call first came in around 1 p.m. Tuesday reporting that a 2-year-old had overdosed at an apartment on Dianella Way, just south of East Southport Road.
Officers arrived and found the child, learning they ate THC edibles around 3 or 4 a.m. and was “drowsy” afterward. But when a family member returned home around noon Tuesday, they found the toddler “breathing but unresponsive.”
The child was rushed to a hospital and was in stable condition as of Thursday.
Child abuse detectives were then called to assist. They soon learned the child’s grandfather, 62-year-old Demetrius Barnes, was “aware the child likely ingested Barnes’ edibles overnight” but did not report it.
Barnes was taken into custody for neglect of a dependent and interfering with reporting a crime. The Marion County prosecutor was expected to make final charging decisions.
