Franciscan Health to host suicide intervention training in Greenwood

GREENWOOD, Ind. (WISH) — Franciscan Health will host a two-day suicide intervention training course in Greenwood in September aimed at equipping community members and caregivers with lifesaving skills.

The LivingWorks Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training, or ASIST, will be Sept. 3-4 at the Franciscan Health Education Center, 421 N. Emerson Ave. Sessions will run from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. each day.

The workshop is open to anyone interested in learning how to help people at risk for suicide, including family members, friends, community members, and professionals in formal caregiving roles. Participants must attend both days to receive certification. Registration is required by Aug. 27. To register, email Tina.Hoffmann@franciscanalliance.org or call 317-528-6609. Hoffman will lead the training.

The training will teach a suicide intervention model that helps people identify warning signs, talk with people about reasons for living and dying, create a safety plan, and connect them with additional support.

The ASIST program emphasizes hands-on learning through lectures, group discussions, role play and simulations, and is designed to help build a “suicide-safer” community, organizers said.
