INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A former Department of Corrections officer has been convicted for the 2023 sexual assault of a woman who was incarcerated in prison.
The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office says that 46-year-old Uzochuku Chinweze assaulted the woman three weeks before he quit his job at the Indiana Women’s Prison in Indianapolis. He was found guilty of rape and two counts of sexual misconduct, all felonies.
The sexual assault happened around the start of July 2023. An investigator with Indiana State Police spoke with the 32-year-old woman who was assaulted, and she said the assault happened in the kitchen and mop closet of Unit 10, where suicidal and mentally ill inmates are housed.
Video footage corroborated what she said.
The ISP investigator then spoke with Chinweze, who said he “did not recall [the woman], but did have a good relationship with inmates.” When asked if he ever went in the closet with her, Chinweze said “I can’t remember.”
Chinweze’s sentencing has been scheduled for Sept. 15.
