Daniel Jones named Colts starting quarterback for the season

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Colts have named Daniel Jones as their starting quarterback for the season, Colts head coach Shane Steichen announced.

Jones was in an open quarterback quarterback competition with Anthony Richardson Sr. throughout the offseason and training camp.

Steichen said he would not have a quick leash with Jones as the starting quarterback.

“You guys heard me talk about the consistency, and that’s really what I was looking for,” Steichen said on the decision to make Jones the starting quarterback.

Steichen explained why Tuesday was the time to make the decision at the quarterback position.

“We got three weeks before our first game and I think it’s fair to the team that they know who their starting quarterback is going to be and they get those reps this week in practice and the following week and getting into game week so there’s just clarity at that position,” Steichen said.

Steichen said he let the team know Tuesday morning, and that the team is supportive of Jones.

Jones played the first six seasons of his career with the New York Giants. He started 10 games for the Giants in 2024, throwing for 2,070 yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions.

He signed a 1-year, $14 million contract with the Colts in the offseason.

The Colts kick off the season in Week 1 against the Miami Dolphins at Lucas Oil Stadium at 1 p.m.
