Cumberland police: Juvenile and man injured from drug deal shooting

CUMBERLAND, Ind. (WISH) — The Cumberland Police Department released an update into a weekend shooting that injured a juvenile and an adult.

Saturday, around 9:30 p.m., Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and Cumberland Police Department officers both responded to a shooting at Knoll Ridge Townhomes, near U.S. 40/East Washington Street and German Church Road.

Police found a male juvenile and a man injured from the shooting. The juvenile had a minor injury, but the man was taken to the hospital for serious injuries. In a press release Monday, Cumberland police say he is expected to survive.

After investigating the scene and finding bullet casings and guns, police say a group of people in a vehicle went to Knoll Ridge Townhomes for a drug deal. One of the people in the vehicle got out to meet with another on East New York Street.

During that meeting, “a group of approximately six individuals attempted a robbery of the individual who was in the vehicle,” Cumberland police say.

A shootout sparked during the robbery, leading to “two of the suspects being struck.”

Those in the vehicle ran away from the shooting and flagged down an IMPD officer on East Washington Street.

Several people were detained at the scene, however, their roles in the shooting are not clear to police. No charges have been filed yet.

Anyone with information on the shooting is urged to call Cumberland police at (317) 894-3525 or email CMPDInvestigations@Cumberland.in.gov.
