Colts rookie shines at joint practice

BALTIMORE (WISH) — The Colts got to match up against another team for the first time this season on Tuesday, as the Baltimore Ravens hosted them for a joint practice.

One of the players that stood out was rookie safety Hunter Wohler.

Wohler had not one, but two interceptions in the practice with the Ravens. And one of them came against two-time MVP Lamar Jackson.

“I think he kept the ball, I don’t know,” Steichen said. “Even though it’s practice, I said, ‘You can keep the ball.’ He’s like, ‘Yeah, it was Lamar (Jackson).’ I said, ‘All right,’ but I thought it was phenomenal.”

Before Wohler went onto the field, he was talking with Colts linebacker Segun Olubi.

“He was like, ‘Hey man, you could go pick off Lamar (Jackson). And I was like, ‘Bro, that’s not going to happen,’” Wohler said.

But, it ended up happening. Jackson was flushed out of the pocket, and Wohler made a leaping snag.

“It’s just all kind of surreal,” Wohler said. “So just trying to take it in stride. Enjoy the moment, enjoy every second of it. Just hang out with the guys and have some fun.”

Steichen has been impressed with Wohler’s performance throughout training camp.

“He’s been standing out all camp, making plays – just a really smart, cerebral player that works at it,” Steichen said. “The effort is there all the time. And when you give great effort, the ball is going to find you. Obviously, it found him twice there in that two-minute drill – to get the interception to seal the game. So, it was phenomenal to see.”

Wohler’s teammates were impressed as well.

“Kudos to him for being able to come out here and get a pick on Lamar Jackson for his first joint practice pick,” Colts safety Camryn Bynum said. “So that’s pretty cool for him.”

Wohler was drafted in the seventh round of the NFL Draft out of Wisconsin.

The Colts are scheduled to kick off in their first preseason game against the Ravens on Thursday at 7 p.m.
