Colts fall to Chiefs on the road in overtime, 33-30

KANSAS CITY (WISH) — The Indianapolis Colts fell to the Chiefs on the road in overtime, 33-30.

Indianapolis held up in the second half, forcing overtime with the score knotted up at 27-27. It was a rollercoaster ride for the Colts in overtime.

After the Colts’ defense allowed a Chiefs field goal on the opening drive of overtime to put the score at 30-27, the Colts offense had a chance to seal the win with a touchdown. After a Daniel Jones 48-yard pass that put the Colts in the red zone, Indianapolis had the Kansas City defense on their heels. Kansas City held the Colts to a 4th and 8, and head coach Shane Steichen decided to kick a field goal instead of going for it to tie the game at 30-30.

The Chiefs offense scored the game-winning field goal on the following drive. Coach Steichen described his decision to kick instead of going for it after the loss.

“I was trying to finish the game with JT [Jonathan Taylor] with the ball in his hands,” Steichen said. “Obviously, he ran it there on first down, ran it again on second down, then we got to a third and long, and they knocked us back there. Daniel [Jones] scrambled there right on the sideline. Then it was fourth and eight, had a play called. Had to love the look to run it there. If not, obviously we took the delay of game there and kicked the field goal to tie it.”

Colts cornerback Sauce Gardner shared his frustrations following the Colts’ narrow overtime loss.

“Those are the types of games that you will think about for a little bit more. A lot of us are probably going to think about it all night like dang man we could’ve done this better, we should’ve did this, we should’ve did that. We’ve got to be able to finish these types of games,” Gardner said. “We went to OT against them last year. They found a way to finish; we’ve got to find a way to finish.”

In overtime, Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker won the game on a 40-yard field goal.

The Colts’ next matchup is next Sunday, September 27th, at home against the Houston Texans.
