Wish You Were Here preview: Carmel
CARMEL, Ind. (WISH) — The next edition of News 8’s Wish You Were Here series promises to be filled with songs and smiles. Our visit coincides with the city’s ‘Summer Family Concert Series at the Gazebo‘.
“We have one every Wednesday in the summer,” Kelly Douglas said on WISH-TV’s Daybreak. Douglas is Carmel’s Director of Marketing and Community Relations. “It’ll be a great show. It always is. And it’s a great family event. It’s a great date night. Everybody loves going to the Gazebo concerts. Even when it’s hot, it’s still nice to go and enjoy being outside and celebrating the community.”
The headliner for August 13 is 45RPM, a band specializing in “faithfully reproducing the hits of the British invasion and America’s musical response.”
The Gazebo is in the large grassy area just north of Carmel City Hall. It’s one of several unique spaces that the city uses in year-round rotation of special events in the city.
“We activate over 140 events during the year, which is a lot,” Douglas said. “It’s a reflection of the quality of life and just how great it is to live there.”
Douglas points to the upcoming Diwali celebration in October as an example of making sure event spaces of different sizes are available.
“We had over 4,700 people at that (inaugural) event in Midtown. So it was very quickly, ‘We need to move this,’” she explained. “So we have moved it to Carter Green.”
Douglas also touted the success of Carmel’s new DORA District. The rule allows adults to take alcoholic beverages outdoors in the Monon Boulevard and downtown area and inside several shops and restaurants, provided it’s in the proper cup.
“You walk around with your DORA cup, and you can go and have a beverage, go shopping in the stores. You just have to make sure that you’re looking for the stickers on the different doors that let you know if it’s welcome or not!”
WISH-TV’s live WISH You Were Here broadcasts are from 3-6:30pm Wednesday, Aug. 13.
