NEW PEKIN, Ind. (WISH) — The Washington County Sheriff’s Department says no one was inside a camper that was washed away by rising floodwater and crashed into a bridge on Thursday.
that crashed into a bridge after being washed away by rising floodwater on Thursday.
The sheriff’s department said on Facebook that it happened behind a Casey’s gas station on Shorts Corner Road in New Pekin. That’s a community on the South Fork of the Blue River about 10 miles outside of Salem.
New Pekin Town Marshall Jeff Thomas caught the moment on camera. The cell phone video shows the camper floating toward the bridge before the strength of the water sends it underneath the bridge.
Several people commented on the post and included pictures of the crumpled camper after it turned up on the other side of the bridge.
Officials say flooding is not unusual in New Pekin, especially after heavy rainfall. Several roads were closed due to high water but reopened after the water receded.
