Bystanders try to rescue driver from fiery wreck, 1 dead in Howard County crash

KOKOMO, Ind. (WISH) — The Howard County Sheriff’s office says that one person died in a wreck Aug. 6 west of Kokomo.

Around 12:13 a.m. near the intersection of State Road 22 and County Road 700 West, a Jeep Wrangler crashed into a Chevrolet Terrain and caught fire. While firefighters rushed to the scene, the Howard County Sheriff’s Office says the driver of the Terrain and other passing drivers tried to rescue the Jeep’s driver from the flames, but the heat was too much.

The Jeep driver, who was the only one in the vehicle, died at the scene. Their identity has not been publicly released.

An investigation says that the Jeep was driving westbound when it hit the rear passenger side of the Chevrolet. The Jeep then left the road and went into a ditch, where it crashed into a tree.

The sheriff’s office says that the Chevrolet driver cooperated with police at the scene. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

While the crash remains under investigation, the Howard County Sheriff’s Office asks anyone with information to contact Sgt. Christopher Cramer at 765-614-3474.
