Butler University to launch new engineering program in 2026

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Butler University will launch a new undergraduate Engineering program in fall 2026, offering degrees in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Bioengineering.

The program aims to address Indiana’s engineering workforce needs by providing rigorous education rooted in Butler’s liberal arts traditions.

“We are equipping students not only to solve technical problems, but to think, communicate, and act ethically as professionals and citizens,” said Jay Howard, Ph.D., Butler’s Interim Provost.

The new program will be housed in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and will integrate a liberal arts foundation into the engineering curriculum. This interdisciplinary approach is designed to prepare graduates to become human-centered engineers who can lead diverse teams and consider the broader social impact of their work.

Students will explore core engineering principles in small, hands-on classes, supported by personalized faculty mentorship and opportunities for community-engaged learning. Each of the three degrees will emphasize digital technology to ensure students are on the cutting edge of advancements in the field.

Bioengineering students will focus on designing solutions that improve lives, while Chemical Engineering students will explore the science behind everyday products. Mechanical Engineering students will learn about energy, motion, and materials, using computer-aided design tools to develop mechanical solutions.

Classes will be taught in Butler’s new Sciences Complex, with access to industry-grade simulators and cutting-edge digital tools.
