Butler students will study on 6 continents through new global degree program

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Butler University on Wednesday announced a first-of-its-kind global degree program called Butler Overseas.

Starting in summer 2027, Butler Overseas will allow students to earn a bachelor’s degree in three years while studying in eight countries in six continents.

The program is the first of its kind in the U.S. to be offered to undergraduates by an accredited university.

Butler says the program aims to prepare leaders for an interconnected world and equip them to address climate change and sustainability issues.

“Butler Overseas provides a transformative opportunity for students seeking a global college experience that opens doors to the world,” Butler University President James Danko said in a release.

The inaugural cohort will include 30-40 first-year students, offering two distinct academic pathways: Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies with a minor in International Business or Bachelor of Science in International Business with a minor in Environmental Studies.

Students will study abroad for six semesters and spend three summers at Butler’s Indianapolis campus, following a curriculum designed to explore major global issues from international and U.S. perspectives.

Students will begin their studies with a two-month summer session at Butler before embarking on a six-semester international journey that includes:

  • Fall Semester 1: London, England
  • Spring Semester 1: Rome, Italy
  • Summer Session 2: Butler University, Indianapolis
  • Summer Session 2: South Africa
  • Fall Semester 2: Sydney, Australia
  • Spring Semester 2: Mérida, Mexico
  • Summer Session 3: Butler University, Indianapolis
  • Fall Semester 3: Buenos Aires, Argentina
  • Spring Semester 3: Kandy, Sri Lanka
  • Commencement: Butler University, Indianapolis

Throughout their global experience, students will receive hybrid instruction, including onsite from The Institute for Study Abroad (IFSA) and remotely from Butler faculty.

“Through this program, students will witness the interconnectedness of humanity as well as the enormity of the world’s most pressing needs, preparing them with distinctive resumes to be future leaders
in tackling persistent global issues with a broader, more informed perspective,” Jill McKinney, Butler’s assistant VP of academic affairs and director of global engagement, said.

The program is expected to attract applicants from across the U.S. and around the world, especially students interested in environmental sustainability, global business, and cross-cultural engagement.
