BOONVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — Boonville’s Mayor is being summoned to court after he was charged for leaving the scene of a crash.
Indiana State Police say the crashed happened May 14 when Mayor Charles Wyatt, 71, was leaving an event at Veterans of Foreign Wars, a veteran support organization, near East Main Street and Millis Avenue.
Police say that at 10:43 p.m. Wyatt backed out of a parking spot and hit another vehicle. “After colliding into the other vehicle, Mayor Wyatt allegedly left the scene without contacting the other driver or police,” ISP wrote in a press release Monday. The other driver was able to catch Wyatt’s license plate number and a description of the truck, which was a city-owned 2016 Ford F-150.
Investigating officers went to Wyatt’s home and found the truck with visible damage. ISP says the officers tried to speak with someone at the home, but no one answered.
The Warrick County Prosecutor’s Office has handed the case over to a special prosecutor in Knox County, who filed a misdemeanor charge for leaving the scene of a crash.
An order summoning Wyatt to court was issued Aug. 1, but a court date has not been set.
