MUNCIE, Ind. (WISH) — Ball State University is taking its Cardinal pride to the virtual gridiron this fall with its first-ever EA Sports College Football 26 Tournament, a collaboration between Ball State Athletics, the Division of Marketing and Communications, and the school’s nationally recognized Esports program.
The single-elimination tournament begins Aug. 29, with matches played each Friday through Sept. 26. The championship is scheduled for Oct. 4. Sign-ups, which opened Aug. 12, will close at 11:59 p.m. on Aug. 26. In a show of school spirit, every match will feature both competitors playing as Ball State.
Released in July, EA Sports College Football 26 builds on last year’s revival of the franchise after an 11-year hiatus. The 2025 edition logged more than 700 million plays nationwide, according to the university.
“Hosting an EA Sports College Football video game tournament is a dynamic way to engage the Ball State community,” said Jeff Mitchell, director of Ball State Athletics. “This event taps into the widespread appeal of college football and gaming, creating a unique opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to connect with alumni, friends, and fans.”
Players will compete in on-campus and off-campus divisions, with winners recognized on Ball State Athletics and Esports social media accounts. The overall champion will receive an exclusive game day experience as Mitchell’s guest at a Ball State home football game, including on-field access during part of the first quarter, a $50 Gameday Spirit gift card, and other Ball State Athletics giveaways.
The tournament is organized by Ball State Esports Director Dan Marino, whose team developed the infrastructure for registration, communication, and gameplay.
The event was previewed Aug. 14 with the “Geoff vs. Jeff Bowl,” a friendly matchup between Ball State President Geoffrey S. Mearns and Mitchell at the Ball State Esports Center. The Cardinals beat the Cardinals in a tight contest.
