Indy Health District breaks ground on affordable housing initiative
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Near North Development Corporation broke ground today on a new affordable housing development at 22nd & Illinois streets in Indianapolis, supported by the Indy Health District, IU Health, and the Indianapolis Neighborhood Housing Partnership.
The $8 million project will consist of approximately 26 homes, including townhomes and duplexes, designed to provide quality, affordable living options for local families and individuals near the city center.
“As we listened to neighbors throughout the District, one message was loud and clear: we need more affordable housing,” Jamal Smith, executive director of the Indy Health District, said. “This development is a direct result of what neighbors told us they want and need.”
This groundbreaking is the first of several major housing investments backed by the Indy Health District in the area. A second project, M22, located nearby at 22nd and Meridian streets, will add 116 affordable and workforce-rate rental units to the District.
The 22nd & Illinois site was chosen for its central location within the Health District, access to public transit, and its potential to spark further redevelopment.
