SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Gunfire happened at a retail and dining hub south of Notre Dame Stadium, forcing the university to alert people to shelter in place just as the game against Michigan State began Saturday night.
ABC57 reported one person was taken to a Memorial Hospital.
The shooting was reported at 7:37 p.m. Saturday at Eddy Street Commons, an urban development with retail and dining situated directly adjacent to the southern boundary of the University of Notre Dame campus.
The Notre Dame Alert Emergency System issued a campuswide warning after the gunman was last seen on the south edge of the campus. University officials ordered those inside the stadium to remain there, while others on campus were told to shelter in place as police searched the area.
Authorities described the suspect as a heavy-set male wearing blue shorts, a black shirt, and one white shoe. Officers from South Bend Police Department and the University of Notre Dame Police Department searched the south edge of campus and the surrounding area for the suspect.
The South Bend Police Department sent a large number of officers to the scene. Police were asking the public to avoid the area and follow all safety instructions from officers on the scene.
