1 found dead inside van pulled from Speedway retention pond

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A person was found dead inside a van pulled from a retention pond Tuesday morning in Speedway, police confirmed.

At around 9:45 p.m. Monday, the Speedway Police Department received a report of a missing person. The caller told police that the person, a male, had not been seen since that morning, according to Speedway PD Public Information Officer Kyle Hodges.

Hodges says officers were called around 7 a.m. Tuesday to a retention pond at the Eagle Lake Landing apartments off of West 21st Street and Cunningham Road, just east of I-465.

Using drones, officers searched the retention pond and located what appeared to be a submerged vehicle.

Speedway police then called the Indiana State Police Dive Team for assistance.

“They came out, went into the water, and we did locate a vehicle about 30 yards offshore, submerged in the water,” Hodges told News 8.

The van was pulled from the water, and a body was found inside.

Hodges could not confirm whether the body is that of the missing person. It’s unclear how the person died, but investigators do not suspect foul play.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office will share the name and age of the deceased once next-of-kin notifications have been made.

This story is developing and will be updated when more information becomes available.
