Man sentenced for killing cellmate

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A man was sentenced to 55 years in prison Wednesday for strangling his cellmate to death in Marion County.

In June 2022, D’Angelo Smith, who was 25-years-old at the time, attempted to clean the crime scene and used bedsheets and a pair of pants to make it appear that his cellmate, Charles Barron, had died by suicide, police say.

“Video from inside the cell showed Smith placing socks over his hands while Barron slept,” a release from police said.

“Smith then wrapped a bedsheet around both hands and checked the hallway multiple times to see whether a deputy was nearby. He then jumped on Barron’s back and strangled him until he stopped moving.”

In an interview with detectives, Smith admitted to killing Barron and staging the scene.

“The defendant attempted to manipulate the scene to hide the truth, but the evidence in this case was undeniable,” Prosecutor Ryan Mears said. “Today’s verdict ensures accountability for Charles Barron’s death and serves as a reminder that violent acts, no matter where they occur, will be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted.”

Smith will serve his time in the Indiana Department of Correction.
