10 Indiana counties under tornado watch

(WISH) — A tornado watch is in effect until 10 p.m. Friday for 10 Indiana counties northwest of Indianapolis.

The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center at 6:20 p.m. issued the watch for parts of Illinois and these Indiana counties: Benton, Carroll, Cass, Fountain, Jasper, Newton, Pulaski, Tippecanoe, Warren and White. That watch area includes the cities of Lafayette and West Lafayette.

Storms that began moving through the area in the 5 p.m. hour on Friday had 60 mph gusts and large hail. At least one may have generated a short-lived tornado in Benton County.

Hail with a quarter-inch diameter was reported about 6:35 p.m. Friday at locations north of West Lafayette. Hail up to an inch about a three-quarters of an inch and larger in diameter was reported about 6:05 p.m. Friday west of West Lafayette. Hail with a 1-inch diameter was reported about 5:13 p.m. Friday west of West Lafayette.

Storm Track 8 reported Friday night that Saturday will bring showers and storms ahead of a cold front in Indiana, with isolated strong to severe storms possible in the afternoon and evening, followed by a much cooler Sunday with breezy winds and partly sunny skies.
