SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WISH) — A suspect was arrested after a vehicle pursuit in South Bend ended with a dramatic water rescue in the St. Joseph River on Monday afternoon.
A South Bend Police Department officer around 1:30 p.m. Monday tried to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation near U.S. 20/Lincoln Way West and Wilber Street, which is southwest of the downtown area.
Deron Phillips, 56, failed to stop, leading to a pursuit that concluded at downtown’s Colfax Avenue Bridge over the St. Joseph River.
After stopping the vehicle, Phillips exited and jumped over the guardrail into the river. Police and fire crews collaborated to rescue Phillips from the water.
Phillips was taken into custody and to a hospital for evaluation. On Monday night, he was being held in the St. Joseph County jail, awaiting a formal charging decision from the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office.
