Students prepare thousands of meals
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Edison School of the Arts is making sure families don’t go without food this Thanksgiving.
On Thursday, students and staff hosted two major service events: One outside, one inside. Both focus on giving back.
The drive through lane at Edison School of the Arts looked a little different Thursday. It was filled with turkeys, boxed sides, and grateful families.
With support from Elanco Animal Health and Hatch for Hunger, the school distributed 380 thanksgiving meal kits.
“We’re going to have a blessed thanksgiving, and we’re going to think of our many, many blessings that we have today and everyday,” said Naomi Shelton.
“I’m going to give one to somebody I know that’s homeless,” said Tandy Robinson. “She’s been homeless for a while now. The other one I’m probably going to give to my neighbor because her mom just passed. So, I’m going to give them Thanksgiving stuff today.”
Elanco says this is the start of providing hunger solutions to Indy’s west side neighborhood.
“We’ve been really committed to try to fill that nutrition gap,” said Lee Thomas, senior director of communications of Elanco Animal Health. “Our turkey giveaway is just one part of that, but it’s part of a longer commitment to make sure Edison families have access to proper nutrition.”
Inside the school gym, another form of giving. 7th and 8th grade student government members partnered with the Million Meal Movement, sponsored by Bank of America, packing 10,000 meals in just two hours. It’s a hands-on lesson in service that students say goes beyond the classroom.
“I think it’s really important for this to happen, especially since I love my school for doing this, and giving us the opportunity to help and give back to our community,” said Emizjah Cannon, a student.
The school’s CEO, Michelle Britton-Watts, said it’s the first time the school has done this type of event, and hopes they can continue in the future.
“Our goal here is to support our students both physically, mentally, and academically, and to be able to partner with our community partners on an event such as this, it just is woven into who we are here at Edison,” Britton-Watts said.
The boxes of food will be delivered to people in need at a later time by students.
