Digging up history at Indianapolis Motor Speedway
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Crews at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Tuesday uncovered historical artifacts while working on Turn 2, revealing bricks from 1937 and the original 1909 stone and tar surface.
The discovery was made as crews were trying to remove bumps in Turn 2 of the track. The original surface was found more than 12 inches below the asphalt.
Doug Boles, the president of IMS and IndyCar, expressed excitement, describing the discovery as “so cool” and noting that the Indianapolis Motor Speedway “never stops surprising us.”
Boles also said the find would definitely be a future installment on the Behind the Bricks series.
