Man arrested for theft of nearly $1M from his grandmother in Jefferson County

MADISON, Ind. (WISH) — A South Carolina man was arrested Thursday for multiple charges related to the theft of nearly $1 million for his grandmother in Jefferson County.

In May 2024, a financial institution reported suspicious transactions involving the accounts of an elderly Jefferson County woman. Indiana State Police detectives began an investigation shortly after. During the investigation, investigators learned that in 2021, Eric Dyer, 54, of Batesburg, South Carolina, was named power of attorney/legal guardian over his grandmother, who resided in an assisted living center in Madison, Indiana.

A review of bank records indicated that between 2022 and 2024, Dyer allegedly withdrew nearly $1 million from his grandmother’s bank accounts for his personal use. Investigators also learned that Dyer was behind in paying his grandmother’s assisted living facility monthly balance.

At the conclusion of the investigation, the case was presented to the Jefferson County Indiana Prosecutor’s Office for review. As a result, a warrant was issued for Dyer for multiple felony counts of theft, money laundering, corrupt business influence, and neglect of a dependent, as well as a misdemeanor charge of elder abuse.

On Thursday morning, Dyer was arrested at a hotel in Madison. He was incarcerated in the Jefferson County Jail and will soon face an initial appearance in court.
