400+ Indiana National Guardsmen return from Middle East
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — More than 400 Indiana National Guard soldiers on Wednesday afternoon returned to Indiana after a nearly yearlong deployment in the Middle East.
The soldiers, part of the 38th Infantry Division, landed at Indianapolis International Airport where they were welcomed by family and friends. They had been deployed in support of Operation Spartan Shield, providing command and control of combat forces and strengthening defense partnerships.
Maj. Gen. Dan Degelow, the 38th ID commanding general, thanked soldiers for their efforts. “You are an all-volunteer force of warriors. At every critical moment, you delivered a superb performance.”
During their deployment from October to July, the 38th Infantry Division soldiers conducted 15 exercises, including field training exercises and combined arms live fires. The exercises were part of efforts to enhance U.S. military readiness and interoperability with regional partners.
Degelow led approximately 600 soldiers during the deployment.
