BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (WISH) — Former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg is set to join the next installment of the “Speaking of Excellence” lecture series at Indiana University.
Buttigieg is set to speak at the IU Auditorium on Thursday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m.
The lecture series is part of a collaboration between Union Board and the IU LGBTQ+ Culture Center.
From 2021 to 2025, Buttigieg served as the U.S. secretary of transportation. During his tenure, he worked to launch over 70,000 infrastructure projects across the country, improve transportation safety and technology, expand airline passenger protections, and resolve pandemic-related supply chain disruptions, according to a news release.
Previously, Buttigieg served two terms as mayor of South Bend, Indiana, where he was elected at the age of 29 and led the city to its strongest period of economic and population growth in decades. He also served for seven years as an officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve, taking a leave of absence from his role as mayor in 2014 to deploy to Afghanistan. He was also a candidate for the Democratic nomination for president in 2020.
Buttigieg holds degrees in history and literature from Harvard University, and in philosophy, politics, and economics from Oxford. Her lives in northern Michigan with his husband Chasten, their two children, Gus and Penelope, and their dog, Buddy.
Tickets are free for IU students and must be reserved in advance. IU faculty/staff tickets are $15 and $25 for the general public. Tickets can be purchased at IUauditorium.com, in person at the IU Auditorium Box Office, and through Ticketmaster.com. The IU Auditorium Box Office is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
