Indy Greekfest returns this weekend
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A taste of Greece is taking over the Circle City this weekend as the annual Indy GreekFest gets underway.
The festival, held on the grounds of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Carmel, is completely volunteer-driven. Organizers say it’s not only a chance to enjoy food and entertainment, but also an opportunity to learn about Greek culture and give back to the community.
“We’ll have authentic Greek dancing, our Hellenic dance troupes performing, and a live Greek band,” Lenie Tsakonas, irector of marketing for GreekFest, said. “It’s all about bringing people together.”
Food is always a highlight, from classic baklava to handmade pastries and even loukoumades, Greek donuts. Festivalgoers can also take part in cooking demonstrations, bringing recipes home and shopping the marketplace for authentic ingredients.
The cultural experience doesn’t stop at the table. Visitors can tour the cathedral throughout the weekend, learning more about Orthodox iconography and traditions.
Beyond the fun, organizers are making sure the festival continues its tradition of giving back. Proceeds help support local charities, including St. Basil’s Food Pantry in Carmel. Families who bring nonperishable items such as cereal boxes or mac and cheese cups will also get a coupon for free donuts.
GreekFest runs Friday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Admission is free.
