INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Head coach Rick Carlisle has agreed to a multiyear contract extension with the Indiana Pacers, according to NBA correspondent Marc Stein.
Carlisle, who just completed the fourth season of his second stint as Pacers’ head coach, led Indiana to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2024 and the NBA Finals last season.
The terms of Carlisle’s contract extension were not disclosed.
A native of New York, Carlisle played college ball at Virginia, helping lead the Cavaliers to the Final Four in 1984. He was selected 70th overall by the Boston Celtics in the 1984 NBA draft. Playing alongside Indiana basketball legend Larry Bird, Carlisle won the NBA Championship in 1986.
Carlisle started his coaching career in 1989 as an assistant with the New Jersey Nets. In 1997, he joined former Celtics teammate and then-Pacers head coach Larry Bird in Indianapolis, where he stayed until 2001. He returned to the Pacers as head coach from 2003 until spring 2007, when he was let go after finishing the season 34-47.
Carlisle went from Indiana to Dallas, where he led the Mavericks to the 2011 NBA Championship. He stepped down from that role on June 17, 2021, and was hired for his second stint as Pacers’ head coach seven days later.
