Rural Street-Mass Avenue crossing south of I-70 set for safety upgrades
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Indiana Department of Transportation on Monday night hosted a meeting to discuss its project to enhance the safety of the intersection of Rural Street and Massachusetts Avenue in Indianapolis.
About 30% of the design of the project is done, but public comments are being sought on the efforts so far. A major goal is to reduce the high rate of severe crashes at the intersection, which sits south of the I-70 interchange for Rural Street and Keystone Avenue.
Proposed improvements include realigning Rural Street between I-70 and Massachusetts Avenue; constructing a new crossing over the CSX railroad, and raising the grades of Rural Street and Massachusetts Avenue south of the crossing.
Plans also call for updating traffic signals and their timings; replacing curb ramps to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act; and improving drainage by replacing or adding inlets.
Construction for the project is anticipated to happen in 2027 and 2028. The possible cost of the project was not publicly shared in overview documents online.
Monday night’s meeting was at the Edna Martin Christian Center in Indianapolis.
