Indiana State Police sees increase in recovered stolen vehicles

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indiana State Police Troopers in Indianapolis have recovered significantly more stolen vehicles this year compared to previous years, the agency announced.

According to a press release, troopers at the Indianapolis Post have recovered 336 stolen vehicles since the beginning of the year.

More than half of the recovered vehicles were tracked down by one group of troopers, “Night Shift B Squad.” The squad of 13 troopers and two supervisors recovered 192 vehicles alone. ISP says this group is not solely an auto theft squad; they have normal patrol duties.

As a result of their work, 359 people have been charged with 764 different counts this year.

The Indianapolis District Commander, Lieutenant Josh Watson, applauded their efforts in the announcement.

“These recoveries send a clear message that vehicle crime will not be tolerated, and we will continue to pursue offenders with determination and precision,” Watson said. “I commend our troopers for their commitment to protecting the community and returning property to its rightful owners. “

ISP credits an increase in license plate reading cameras in helping with the increase in recovered vehicles.

The news release also claims that stolen vehicle recoveries also aid other investigations, leading to large drug busts, illegal gun recoveries, among others.
