Indiana Republicans in US House back Trump’s call for state’s redistricting

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — In social media posts on Monday, all seven Indiana Republicans in the U.S. House endorsed President Donald Trump’s desire to redistrict the state’s congressional seats.

So far, only state legislators in California and Texas have taken significant steps toward a mid-decade redistricting, The Associated Press reported Monday. Missouri has set aside money to prepare for a special session on redistricting.

Indiana Republican state lawmakers face more limited possibilities of squeezing out another GOP seat in Indiana. Republican U.S. representatives outnumber Democrats 7-2 in the state already.

On July 28, the White House extended an invitation to Indiana’s Republican lawmakers to come to Washington on Aug. 26 to discuss Trump’s agenda.

On Aug. 7, Vice President JD Vance came to the Indiana Statehouse to discuss redistricting and other topics with Republican state leaders in the legislature.

In an interview Aug. 12, Republican Gov. Mike Braun was noncommittal on redistricting. At least three Republican states representatives — from Carmel and Seymour — have said they see no need for Indiana to redistrict its congressional seats.

Experts say the taxpayer cost of calling a special legislative session in Indiana would likely be over a half-million dollars.
