‘Daniel Jones is oatmeal’: Colts contributor Heather Lloyd dishes on team in breakfast terms

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Indianapolis Colts head into the week of their final preseason game with two losses, no wins, and several pressing questions still unanswered.

To reflect on the challenge ahead, Daybreak Colts Contributor Heather Lloyd found her muse in, of all things, the breakfast menu.

Her first item on the ticket: Daniel Jones.

“(Jones) is oatmeal, which is fine. It does the job, fills you up, and gives you the energy you need to get through the day,” Lloyd said about the quarterback during the Monday morning Colts conversation on WISH-TV. “It’s not exciting, but it’s consistent and you know what to expect from it.”

Lloyd is quick to say that oatmeal is not necessarily a negative, but that it’s definitely a sharp contrast to the team’s other QB1 contender, Anthony Richardson.

“Anthony Richardson is eggs Benedict: When it’s good, it’s really, really good. It’s something you want more of. But if it’s bad, it could make you really sick, and then you’re left saying, ‘Dang, I should have just had the oatmeal.’”

Lloyd suggests that in this metaphorical diner, ordering up both can serve as a recipe for success.

“Both quarterbacks had a solid possession during Saturday’s game and both had a not-so-great possession,” she said. “With Richardson, you get the big plays balanced out by the big mistakes and with Jones, you get more consistent passes, but without the dynamic highlights.

“I’ve said all along that I’d start Daniel Jones, let him get you down the field with quick passes and insert Richardson for big runs and big throws. You can adjust how much they both play as the season goes. But use them both for what they do best.”

Once on a (cinnamon?) roll, Lloyd offered this about the other side of the ball:

“The Colts defense has a brand new coordinator and a brand new look, and so far, they look much improved! Let’s say they went from poached eggs, which is pretty plain and predictable, to a breakfast scramble, where you’ve got cheese and hash browns and you’re not really sure what else they threw in there, but you know you like it.”

To wrap up the roster menu, she toasted her new favorite Colt Spencer Shrader as a Pop Tart.

“Yes! The Colts can kick 50-plus yard field goals again!”
