INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — All eyes have been on the Colts quarterback battle throughout training camp and the first two preseason games.
Anthony Richardson Sr. and Daniel Jones have been in an open quarterback competition. Colts head coach Shane Steichen had been consistent in saying that he does not have a timetable for when the decision will be made, but it could be coming soon.
“I’m very close, I’ll say that. I’m very close,” Steichen said.
“I’d like to have a decision here shortly.”
Steichen said the operation is a factor in deciding who the starting quarterback will be.
“The operation, the communication in the huddle, the checks, getting guys on the same page, the consistency of all that is obviously going to play a big factor in this,” Steichen said.
The bottom line for Steichen though, is what is best for the team.
“When I make this decision, I’m going to do what I feel is best for this football team,” Steichen said.
Both Richardson and Jones led scoring drives for the Colts on Saturday against the Packers.
Jones started the game and led a field goal drive in his second drive of the game. He was 7-of-11 passing for 101 yards in the game.
Steichen said Jones was efficient throwing the football, and thought he had a clean operation.
Richardson came in for the rest of the first half, leading the Colts on a 90 yard touchdown drive in his first drive. He was 6-of-11 passing for 73 yards in the game.
“I thought he did a nice job,” Steichen said about Richardson. “He had that one really good drive there. I thought he did some good things. I think he finished 6-of-11. You know, some things to clean up as well. But I thought he made some good plays out there.”
The Colts have one more preseason game left on the schedule. They travel to Cincinnati to play the Bengals on Saturday, August 23.
