4 Carmel teens charged with felony robbery after shooting injures man

CARMEL, Ind. (WISH) — Four 17-year-old boys on Thursday were charged with high-level felony counts of robbery after a shooting on Saturday afternoon in Carmel, court documents show.

Malachi Hoffman, Dalen Peden, Jalen Peden and Beau Shanley — all from Carmel — were charged as adults in Hamilton Superior Court 5 in Noblesville. No additional court dates were set, according to online records.

Carmel Police Department on Saturday reported the arrests of the 17-year-olds and a 14-year-old juvenile, also from Carmel.

The department on Thursday declined to say whether the 14-year-old will face any formal criminal charges, and referred questions to the Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office. It did not respond to an email request for information made after the office had closed Thursday.

Court documents say investigators learned the shooting stemmed from the purchase of weed vape pens. The man who was shot later told investigators he was robbed of about $1,200 in cash and a box containing his weed vape pens.

The shooting about 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the 1100 block of Golfview Drive in the parking lot of Gramercy Apartments seriously injured a man in the ribs. The man was taken to St. Vincent Carmel Hospital for treatment.

Police said in court documents that license plate readers helped them capture the suspects.

All four 17-year-olds were charged with a high-level felony counts of robbery resulting in serious bodily injury; two mid-level felony counts of robbery by force; and a low-level felony count of intimidation.

Dalen Peden was also charged with a mid-level felony count of aggravated battery; a low-level felony count of dangerous possession of a firearm by a child; and misdemeanor counts of dangerous possession of a firearm by a child, and unlawful carrying of a handgun.

Jalen Peden was also charged with a low-level felony count of dangerous possession of a firearm by a child; and misdemeanor counts of dangerous possession of a firearm by a child, and unlawful carrying of a handgun.

Both of the Pedens live at the same address.
