Government funding cuts town hall tonight
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Hoosiers concerned about government budget cuts, both at the state and federal level, will have a chance to get answers and resources Thursday night at a local town hall.
Julia Vaughn, executive director of Common Cause Indiana, joined Daybreak to talk about the People’s Promise Town Hall, which aims to help residents understand how recent budget decisions could affect daily life.
“We’ve seen huge cuts to programs like SNAP, Medicaid, and veterans’ services,” Vaughn said. “People are feeling the impact. Costs are rising, protections are being eroded, and opportunities are shrinking.”
The town hall will feature a mix of experts and elected officials, along with a resource fair. Vaughn said service providers and advocacy groups will be available to help residents bridge gaps caused by cuts.
“This is a chance for people to get information, ask questions, and make their voices heard,” Vaughn said. “There’s been a disconnect between elected officials and the people they represent. Many of these cuts are very unpopular, but unfortunately, a majority of representatives in both Washington, D.C., and Indianapolis voted for them.”
Speakers at the event include Senator Hundley, who will address state-level decisions made during the legislative session, and Adam Mueller, who will focus on immigration and housing issues. Additional sessions will cover access to health care and reentry programs for people who have been incarcerated.
Vaughn emphasized the importance of hearing directly from Hoosiers. “We’ll be asking people, ‘How have cuts in SNAP affected your ability to put food on the table?’ These stories will be lifted up and shared with elected officials so they understand the real impact.”
The People’s Promise Town Hall runs from 6 – 8 p.m. Thursday at Southeast Community Services, 901 Shelby St., Indianapolis.
