Colts offensive coordinator weighs in on QB competition

WESTFIELD, Ind. (WISH) — The Colts wrapped up their second to last practice of training camp at Grand Park on Monday.

The focal point of training camp has been the quarterback competition between Anthony Richardson Sr. and Daniel Jones.

Colts offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter shared what he has seen from the competition, and how it has helped push the two quarterbacks to improve, as camp is nearing its end.

“These guys are both good players that have played good football in this league and we expect them to come out and compete really, really hard,” Cooter said. “We expected the competition to bring out the best in both of them. That’s what we are seeing. It hasn’t been perfect, we’ve had our plusses and our minuses, but the guys each run a different group in a different period of the day and shoot they are competing to score as many points as they can with that group. Or move the ball as much as they can or whatever the success is in that drill. I think it is raising the level of each of them. It’s good to see. It’s good for our offense. The better they’re playing, the better the guys around them are playing and they are feeding off each other and that has been really good to see.”

Jones will start for the Colts in their second preseason game against the Packers on Saturday. He will play the first couple series, and Richardson will play the rest of the first half, Colts head coach Shane Steichen said on Sunday.

Jones threw for 144 yards on 10/21 passing in the Colts first preseason game against the Ravens. Richardson was 2/3 for 21 yards before he left with a dislocated right pinky.

The Colts will have a joint practice against the Packers on Thursday at Grand Park. Kickoff in the preseason game is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Lucas Oil Stadium on Saturday.
