INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Conselor (OUCC) is asking the public to submit written comments on AES Indiana’s proposed rate hike.
AES Indiana is trying to increase rates by 13.5% split between two phases over two years. For someone who uses 1,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) a month, the increase will amount to $177.60 according to OUCC.
News 8 previously reported that Citizens Action Coalition, a nonprofit group, hosted a town hall for Hoosiers to voice their concerns on the proposed increase. At that town hall, the Coalition said the rate increase will be a heavier burden on residents than for commercial or industrial businesses.
In response, AES Indiana said the increase was targeted “to only making necessary and prudent investments needed to ensure continued reliable service.” The utility company says the increase is in response to the rising cost of labor, materials, infrastructure investments, and repairs from storm damage.
Now, OUCC–which represents consumer interests in cases before the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC)–is asking for public comments on AES’ proposal. “Consumer comments will be included in the formal case record for Commission review,” OUCC said in a press release. Your comments will help OUCC prepare their testimony and might be included in the case’s evidentiary record.
Public comment is open until Sept. 2. No sensitive or personal information should be included in your comment, as they will be viewable through the IURC’s case file. Comments should include your name, city, zip code, and a reference either to “IURC Cause No. 46258” or simply “AES Rates.”
Written responses can either be submitted on the OUCC’s website or mailed to:
