City-County council set to vote on new curfew
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — On Monday, the Indianapolis City-County Council is scheduled to take a final vote on a proposal that would extend the city’s curfew for people under 18 years old. If approved, it would make it stricter than the state’s curfew law.
Under the proposal, teens between the ages of 15 and 17 would need to be off the streets starting at 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday night. Sunday through Thursday night curfew would start at 9 p.m. Meanwhile, for children 14 and under, the curfew would start at 9 p.m. every night of the week.
The proposal came after a fatal mass shooting in the early morning hours of July 5 that left two teenagers dead and five others hurt.
Since being introduced by City-County Councilor Leroy Robinson, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department has been temporarily enforcing the stricter curfew. Community groups have also increased their presence downtown to remind people about the curfew.
Also at Monday’s meeting, a proposal to fine parents if their children are caught out past curfew will be introduced to the council. The proposal would send a written warning to parents for the first offense, a $500 fine for a second offense and a $1,500 fine for any following offenses.
