PORTLAND (WISH) — Arrow McLaren teammates Christian Lundgaard and Pato O’Ward showed their speed on Saturday afternoon at Portland International Raceway.
The duo were the two fastest cars in qualifying during the Firestone Fast 6.
Lundgaard captured the pole with a lap time of 58.393 seconds, while O’Ward was second fastest, turning a lap of 58.534 seconds.
Lundgaard may be credited with the pole, but he will not start first in Sunday’s BITNILE.com Grand Prix of Portland. He will instead start seventh after being assessed a six-position grid penalty for an unapproved engine change following Friday’s practice.
As a result, O’Ward will lead the field to green Sunday afternoon.
“This was kind of best-case scenario for us, obviously, with a six-place grid penalty,” Lundgaard said after qualifying on the television broadcast. “I’m just proud of this team.”
Meyer Shank Racing’s Felix Rosenqvist, who posted the third fastest lap in the Firestone Fast 6, will start alongside O’Ward in row one.
O’Ward entered the weekend 121 points behind Alex Palou in the IndyCar standings.
Palou is the only driver who can clinch the series title on Sunday. The Chip Ganassi Racing driver qualified sixth, but will move up to the fifth starting spot due to Lundgaard’s penalty.
The green flag will wave on Sunday a little after 3 p.m. EDT.
