INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is inviting the community to send get well cards to an officer who was shot by a carjacking suspect last week.
Officer Renteria, a four-year veteran of IMPD, was shot three times by a carjacking suspect at an apartment complex off of Lafayette Road West 16th Street on July 29.
Police say the carjacking happened around 2 p.m. in the area of 16th and Harding streets. The officer spotted the stolen vehicle nearby and tracked it to the apartment complex, where he was shot.
Officer Renteria fired back at the shooter, striking him at least once. At last check, the wounded suspect was still in the hospital. The three other suspects were found and arrested.
Renteria spent several days in the hospital and is now at home.
“Your kind words mean a lot as he continues to recover,” IMPD said Wednesday on X.
