WESTFIELD, Ind. (WISH) — The ninth day of training camp practice for the Indianapolis Colts came to an abrupt stop midway through as running back Salvon Ahmed went down in the end zone with a severe leg injury.
Ahmed was taken to the ground with an illegal hip-drop tackle from rookie safety Trey Washington.
The entire Colts team surrounded Ahmed while he was on ground for multiple minutes before trainers eventually lifted him on to a stretcher. Quarterback Anthony Richardson and defensive lineman DeForest Buckner were among the Colts players consoling Ahmed right after the injury.
The five-year veteran left practice with a towel covering his face.
Head coach Shane Steichen opened up his post-practice media availability addressing the situation.
“Never want to see that happen. I know we don’t encourage hip-drop tackles. I know Trey (Washington) is down in the dumps. I don’t think he’s trying to do that,” Steichen said.
“We’re just trying to create an edge – is what I’m trying to get done, especially in the developmental. Those guys are going to have to tackle come preseason. But thoughts and prayers with Salvon, and hopefully he has a speedy recovery.”
This is the second straight year a Colts offensive playmaker has been injured during training camp. Last summer, wide receiver Josh Downs sustained an ankle injury after he was tackled by safety Nick Cross early in camp. Downs missed the first two weeks of the regular season as he recovered.
The Colts travel to Baltimore Monday before joining the Ravens for a joint practice Tuesday. The two teams then face each other in their first preseason game Thursday at 7 p.m. Eastern.
