Indiana State Fair celebrates Ability Awareness Day

Ability Awareness Day at the Indiana State Fair

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Sunday is the third day of the Indiana State Fair and it is also Ability Awareness Day at the Indiana State Fair put on by Easterseals Crossroads, a social organization to help those with disabilities.

Day-long events and activities celebrate inclusion and accessibility for individuals with disabilities.

“It’s a great presence for people statewide who have disabilities to come and see what it’s all about. We have 20-plus partners here that we’re grateful to have showed up here and help to show what we have,” President and CEO of Easterseals Crossroads David Dreith said.

The group has an accessible gaming tent with adaptive-gamer Brandon Scott who showcases inclusive tools that support independence in daily life.

“I think our gaming is going to be a little more hyped up that we did last year. E-gaming is so huge for people with disabilities, it’s a great equalizer. It’s a great way for people with disabilities to find lasting relationships, not just with local people but people around the world,” Dreith said.

Out of all the fun activities and events and faces he sees, Dreith says one part of being at the State Fair stands above the rest. “My favorite part today really is when somebody who has received our services in the past comes up and just says, ‘Thank you,’ to one of our staff–it’s just huge. It reminds me of why we do what we do,” he said.

Conquer Paralysis Now and NeuroHope are two other disability-advocating organizations that will also have an obstacle course on site for people to enjoy as well with many other vendors on site.
