INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Wayne Gretzky, known in hockey circles as “the Great One,” once said, “A good hockey player plays where the puck is. A great hockey player plays where the puck is going to be.”
Indianapolis Public Schools will soon be where the puck is at.
The district is seeking 25 students in grades 3-6 to join hockey team development classes starting in the fall.
The program, aimed at teaching skating and hockey basics, will provide full gear to participants thanks to a secured grant. Weekly practices and scrimmages, with an hour of ice time, will help students develop their skills.
A blog post from the district said the classes are open to students who meet their school expectations, show dedication to practice, and demonstrate coachability. The focus will be on teaching students to skate and introducing them to hockey in a fun and engaging way. The program was designed to get kids active, teach resilience and persistence, grow confidence, and foster a love for the sport.
Interested parents can contact Kathy Langdon with the IPS physical and health education department at langdonk@myips.org or text 317-681-4033 for more information. Sign-ups are open online, and the program will be in touch with participants by Aug. 16.
